George “Catalina” Drake

Just uploaded a bunch of photos of my half great uncle, Ronald McGarel Hogg, who wrestled under the name George “Catalina” Drake. I copied the photos from Ron’s photo album, which my cousin Kat inherited after her mother, Nan, died.

Ron and Nan were half-siblings of my grandmother, Penny, and Nana, Hypatia. Their mother was Millie Dunton Noordwal Hogg.

I liked this intro to a newspaper column he wrote: “George Drake normally is as soft spoken as they come in or out of the ring. He rarely becomes angry unless an opponent gets far out of line. Outside the ring he prefers to spend his time on the beach rather than in an argument.”

He died a month after I was born, but I idolized him as a kid and even took wrestling because of him.

I love this photo of him. He was one of THOSE guys!

  3. She was his wife (her 2nd husband), and my mom says Nana was a tremendous cook. My Grandma says she remembers the picture. Margaret Asaf was her maiden name, or Ambielli was her 1st married name, most people called her Maggie. Here is a quote from my fb my mom said about “daddy drake”. Victoria Webster – “The only man in my life I ever loved as a Dad. I love you my son for posting this. The last family picture he ever took was holding you as an infant. Few people knew how wonderfully creative and sensitive he was…he was a gem!”

  4. Oh, OK. I remember corresponding with Pat M. about this. No one on my side of the family seems to know anything about Ron’s marriage to Maggie, although she sent me the marriage certificate. Maggie is still alive? I would love to know more! I also would love to see the photo of him holding you! I would enjoy any information you wanted to share. I’m not actively doing genealogy work right now, but hopefully I will have time again someday. It would be great to have the full names and birthdates of you and your mom to add to my family tree. Please feel free to email me at webcomments@patiastephens.com.

When you say Nana, whom are you referring to? I called Hypatia my Nana, but she was only a pretty good cook. However, her and Ron’s mother, Millie, was apparently a “tremendous” cook.
